The TCR List is a list and a web site that serves the international community of freelance translators. On the list, translators discuss payment experiences with different agencies and companies they have worked with, as well as discussing other related topics.
All subscriptions must be pre-approved by the moderator. Therefore, your subscription request will not be automatically approved. You may need to wait a few hours before your membership is activated. Please rest assured that this process is always done in a timely fashion, but the moderator (Laura Hastings) lives in Arizona, USA and may well be asleep when you fill out your request form!
You will be notified of the activation of your membership via a "Welcome" message containing important information regarding your membership to the TCR List.
This is a strictly MODERATED list, governed by a short list of Rules that must be complied with due to legal implications. The purpose of these rules is to keep the list orderly and legal and help to keep the archives well organized for search purposes.
Please note that this web site and e-mail list are primarily to provide service to freelance translators and translators who also function as small translation brokerages. Regular representatives of translation agencies are free to join this group, but will be subject to all the same rules and restrictions as any other member and will not be eligible for scholarships or trial subscriptions.
All members are required to verify their identity, which will happen as you follow the subscription process. Once your identity has been verified, you may subscribe using an anonymous email addresses, such as yahoo or hotmail email addresses.
Members are also required to fill out a short form to give the owner of the list access to contact information and reasons for wanting to join the TCR List. THIS INFORMATION IS STRICTLY CONFIDENTIAL AND WILL NEVER BE SOLD OR SHARED WITH ANYONE ELSE.
Archives are free to all members of the list. There is an archive located on this site that contains all the messages sent to the TCR List (Yahoo Group) from its inception until May 10, 2002, when the list was migrated to the new service.
The new service began to host the TCR members on May 10, 2002, and will contain an archive containing all messages from that date forth.
The TCR List was founded in May of the year 2000, on Yahoo Groups. Due to many problems, among them the lack of confidentiality, spam, lack of support, and generally a lack of respect for the privacy of Yahoo list members, the TCR List members became disenchanted with the free list platform.
The list owner, Laura Hastings, began to search for a private alternative. A service was found that offered complete privacy and ownership by its members, but it was expensive. Laura went to the list for suggestions on how to handle the opportunity. One of the members, Márcio Badra, suggested that members send one dollar a month to pay for the service. A poll was run, and the overwhelming majority decided that they wanted to go with the paid service.
This is how the private, completely confidential TCR List was born, and began its life on May 10, 2002.
The TCR List web site offers discounts, tips, information and a gathering place for the members of the TCR List.
There is a modest, non-refundable $12.00 annual fee for members of the TCR List. Please be aware that your membership is NON-TRANSFERABLE.
